Windows XP update locks machines with SVCHOST redlined at 100%: Fix it with KB 2879017

There is a bug where Windows XP is locking machines and utilizing the CPU at 100%.  Windows Update is said to fix this, but when your computer is running at 100%, it is almost impossible to automatically fix this.  You may need to follow these steps to fix it:

  1. Kill SVCHOST
    1. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE
    2. Click on the Processes Tab
    3. Click on the CPU Column to sort by programs
    4. If your computer is affected by the bug then SVCHOST will be running at 99.  Highlight and click on "End Process"
  2. Go into Control Panel => Automatic Updates => Turn off Automatic Updates
  3. Repeat Step one to make sure SVCHOST is not running.
  4. Open Internet Explorer
  5. Click on Help or the Question Mark Icon and click "About Internet Explorer" to determine which I
  6. Download the appropriate fix for your corresponding version of Internet Explorer:

    2. IE7 Fix: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40519
    3. IE8 Fix: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40390
  7. Run the fix and restart the computer
  8. Re-enable Automatic Updates in Control Panel => Automatic Updates => and select your preferred update method.

    Good Style. Informed but not drowning in techtalk. This topic is causing me grief, but the victim in this case - a big Dell laptop - has been recently switched from Explorer 8 to Firefox. It's still locking at 100% CPU for ages, so could this MS update do anything good?

Metrics - Patient Response Button Fix

A Patient Response Button (aka "The Clicker") for our Zeiss FDT went out again at our office and I decided to see what the problem was.   When I took it apart, I found that it was a very simple fix.  In this post, I will show a quick fix to get your Patient Response Button back up and running.  A quick fix if you’re waiting for the replacement from Zeiss ($35 plus shipping).  Disclaimer:  Although this is a VERY simple electronic fix, please do so at your own risk.  I will not be held responsible for any damage caused by using this fix.
